Do It Over Designers - The Recycle Bin

Our task this month, for the Do It Over Designers,  was to grab something out of our recycle bin and recreate it!

After Christmas I cleaned out my glass cupboard and got rid of any "singles" I had.  This didn't stay in the recycle bin for long:

Do It Over Designers -

It's time again for the DO IT OVER DESIGNERS to share a holiday recycling craft!

I bought a book at the thrift store and ripped it apart, with two craft ideas in my mind:

Do It Over Designers - November

    Do it Over Designers

I am joining Ann, from Apple Street Cottage, for Do It Over Designers, where we transform something that needs a makeover!

This lamp blew over in the wind by an open window one day.  As I was taking it apart to put it into the trash, I decided to keep a few pieces for a project.

I cut the electrical cord and unscrewed a few of the pieces:

I kept the finial, base....

...and a middle section:

My first idea was to stack them for a candle stick, but it was a bit top heavy:

I pulled out the best glue ever:  E6000

I topped the largest piece with an old silver tray:

When serving food at a buffet it's always a good idea to have varying heights....

...so this piece will be used a lot...

for desserts, hors d'eouvres or cheese and crackers:

The smaller piece was perfect as a candlestick:

Most of my candles are battery operated, so this slender candle fit perfectly:

The last piece was the finial:

It looked much better on this lamp than the original:

These were very simple projects and a great way to upcycle a broken lamp!

I hope you'll visit my other creative friends to see their "do it over" projects:

Pinterest Challenge - Happy National Thrift Shop Day

Today,  August 17th, is National Thrift Shop Day and I am joining the Pinterest Challenge to show how I used old frames to make wreaths.

The purpose of this challenge is to actually make something from a photo we have pinned.

Do it Over Designers....MAPS

While I am away, and basking in the sun, I leave you with these clever ideas and a blog hop:

I am joining Ann from Apple Street Cottage who hosts a group of clever bloggers 6 times a year for Do It Over Designers.

I am sharing a few ways to use old school maps or travel maps.

My first idea is to simply frame a map for a child's bedroom.  This will encourage them to see other countries are located and realize how large our world is!

I had an old black frame and I simply stapled the map around the frame.  Hobby Lobby often sells frames that might have a damage corner, or a small crack, for little money, and would be perfect for this idea.  I used an old school map which was vinyl and easy to attach!

This is an old school chair, very sturdy, but the seat was worn and scratched.

Using Mod Podge, a map can be applied to update a desk chair for your home office:

Using the same procedure, I covered a damaged leather top wine table with a local paper map:

One of my favorite things to do with vacation town maps is to use them as gift wrap paper!

Another idea is to use a map to create an envelope:

Just take apart and envelope and use it as a pattern....

...and glue or tape it back together!

Attach a mailing label for the address:

You can also create gift bags in the same manner:

Thanks, Ann, for hosting Do It Over Designers!

Do It Over Designers - Recycling Your Throw-aways!

Today I am sharing a few quick and easy ways to recycle our typical throw-aways to create packaging for birthdays gifts, holiday gifts or last minute hostess gifts.

The first idea is to take a pizza/cookie box....

....and cover it with gift wrap...

...and attach a card, ornament or label on top:

So, what can you put inside?

How about a chocolate pizza  (recipe HERE).....

...or cookies (try this delish recipe HERE) or candy (recipe HERE)

**************

I still enjoy magazines.  I know we can see most of the ideas, recipes and stories online, but there is something about flipping through the magazines, dog-earing pages that have something that caught my eye, and ripping out recipes!

I try to pass magazines on to someone else, but I have found a way to use the covers!

So, I created a few tote bags!

Sometimes I need just a small reusable bag when I run into a store and this is the perfect size:

These also make unique gift bags!

They are simple to make and all you need is 5 magazine covers, a grommet tool and grommets, ribbon or cording and a sewing machine!

What can you put inside?  Make-up, t-shirt, jewelry or any "fashionable" gift!

********************

My last idea is to use a large tin can and a wooden ornament that you can find at the craft store.  You can paint your own, or buy one already painted.  Spray paint a can and glue the ornament on the front:

These can be filled with cookies, sox, candy, jewelry....the ideas are endless!
