Inexpensive MacKenzie-Childs Gifts....

While I am "playing" in Aurora this week at the MacKenzie-Childs Barn Sale, I thought you might like some ideas for inexpensive little gifts that you can pick up at the Barn Sale.  I like to keep a few of these items on hand for hostess gifts and they always seem to be appreciated!

A few paper goods can always be an easy gift to bring to the "birthday girl"....

...or tuck a few packs of napkins into a M-C pouch as a "thank you gift"....

...the enamel soap dishes are always a sweet gift, add a bar of soap!....

...you can never go wrong with a cake mix, spatula and cake cups....

...for the youngster, a soda and straws would be fun....

...again, paper plates and napkins are a perfect little gift...

...adding a pack of napkins to a dip mix with a little spreader is a gift I would love to receive...

...adding a sparkly hair bow to soap and an enamel dish would be perfect for the teen!

I thought you might like a little inspiration in case you will be at the Barn Sale....it's always nice to have a few "gifts" on hand.

AND, if you are at the Barn Sale, I hope to see you there - please say HI !!

I'll be wearing my checked hat and sneaks:

Dinner, al fresco.....

It is HOT out on our back patio, but tonight was breezy so we decided to sit out there for dinner....

John cooked sausages on the grill and I made a Ranch Potato Salad that was scrumptious!
The recipe is below!

I set the table with MacKenzie-Childs paper and plastic dishes!

Years ago I bought quite a few packages of these paper plates and I still have plenty to use!

I topped them with the plastic berries plates and served the potato salad in little green plastic cups that I bought years ago at the Christmas Tree Shop!  The green plastic stemware is from Pottery Barn and the harlequin forks are from Wegman's.

Dinner was delish!

Ranch Potato Salad
Ingredients
  • 3 pounds red potatoes, halved or quartered
  • 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 (1-ounce) package Ranch seasoning mix
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
Instructions
  1. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain well and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together sour cream, mayonnaise, and Ranch seasoning mix.
  3. Add potatoes, cheddar cheese, and green onions and stir well.
  4. Sprinkle bacon on top. Refrigerate until chilled.

I remember when....

I started this blog on March 6, 2009, a little over 10 years ago.  My goal was to "journal"....sharing my everyday life, talents and ideas.  I have followed bloggers who got married, some divorced, and a few remarried.  Babies were born to a few who didn't want children, and they became great moms!  Lots of grandmothers shared their little blessings!  Some lost their spouses and a few bloggers even passed away.  I was saddened by some with illnesses, others who struggled with personal problems and a few who felt hopeless.

I watched homes be decorated in a variety of styles, learned myriad of crafts and tried numerous recipes.  I made "friends" with bloggers from all over this country who have enriched my life.  Some I communicate with regularly, some I have had the blessing to meet in person, and others who probably don't even know that I exist (but I feel that I know them personally!)

I watched some succeed professionally: books have been published, businesses have been created and products have been designed.  It is so exciting to walk into a book store, see a book and think "I know this blogger", or to walk into the hardware store and recognize a brand name as a blogger I used to follow!

There were many times I found myself feeling like I could never be good enough, rich enough, smart enough, happy enough, skinny enough, cute enough, clever enough, or creative enough.

So, I simply unfollowed.

I hope that my posts never made my readers feel that way!

Blogging has certainly changed in the 10 years.  I have stopped following many due to the fact that numerous "ads" pop up, other pop ups ask you to sign up for their email list, others do not return to visit my blog (which used to be a courtesy) and some are not as "positive"  or enjoyable as they used to be.

Recently Link Parties seem to be used only to "drive" traffic and not to create connections or friendships.  A few bloggers "fell off the face of the earth" and some pulled the wool over my eyes and cheated me.

I learned to make wreaths from the pages of a paper back book, I glued glass bowls onto candlesticks to make pedestal serving pieces, I covered lampshades with fabric, I used tutorials to learn how to paint MacKenzie-Childs black and white checks, I tried many decorating styles and so on.  I was inspired by many!

I just don't seem to have the time to read as many blogs as I used to and I have lost touch with many.

My point to this is to share what happened recently.

My husband and I took a trip to Virginia from NY. to see our daughter and SIL who recently moved outside Washington, DC.  While traveling on a back road, in VA, not far from the Maryland border and the Potomac River, we came to a red light.  A large building sign caught my attention: LUCKETTS.

How did I know that name?

And slowly it came to me.....

Marion from Miss Mustard Seed had a booth there and I watched her business grow as I followed her blog years ago.  I lost touch with her throughout the years, but we had to stop to visit the shop!

After my visit to the store, and for the last 30 minutes of our drive,  I reminisced about my 10 years of blogging and thought about those of whom I lost touch, those who stopped blogging and those who are no longer with us.

I also tried to remember the names of some of the old blogs who were "bookmarked" on my old computer. It was so much fun to reconnect with Miss Mustard Seed's blog, read some of her posts from the last few years and to learn that she moved away from the area and no longer had a booth at Lucketts.  She is someone who probably never knew of me, but certainly had an impact on some of my creative endeavors years ago!

Blogging has been a rewarding 10 years for me and I look forward to many more years of sharing my adventures with you!  It has been a creative outlet, allowing me to share my creativity, everyday adventures and family with you and I appreciate you following along with me!

A Cake Frog?....

My friend, Debbie, at Mountains Breath bought me this fun little gadget....

...can you tell what it is used for?

Here's a hint:

You use it to create a little floral arrangement....

...and then you push it into a cake - I guess you could call it a "Cake Frog"!!

This is a blueberry cake, John's favorite!

As you know I don't have much of a green thumb, so I picked random flowers and herbs from the yard, shaking them off well to make sure there were no little "buggies" in them!

It's a quick and simple way to "Pretty - Up" a simple cake!

Blueberry Cake:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 pints (4 cups) fresh blueberries

GLAZE INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS:

TO MAKE THE CAKE:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease and flour a bundt pan, and set aside. (See tips below for how to properly grease/flour a pan. Also, I used a 10-cup large bundt pan.)
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt until combined.
Using an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar together on medium-high speed for about 3 minutes, or until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to medium-low. Add vanilla, almond extract, and eggs(one at a time). Continue beating for an extra 2 minutes, scraping down the pan once or twice so that everything is well mixed. Add in half of the flour mixture, and beat on low speed until just combined. Add in half of the Greek yogurt, and beat on low speed until just combined. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture and Greek yogurt, beating until just combined. (Do not overbeat.) Fold in the blueberries by hand, reserving a dozen or so extra berries on the side.
Sprinkle the reserved blueberries evenly around the bottom of the prepared bundt pan. Then pour batter evenly into the pan on top of them, and spread the top of the batter with a spoon until it is smooth.. Bake for 60 to 75 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center of cake comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes, or until the metal pan is lukewarm to the touch (and not hot). Invert the cake onto a cooling rack or serving dish, and let it cool completely. Drizzle with the glaze.
Serve immediately, or store covered for up to 5 days.

TO MAKE THE GLAZE:

Whisk ingredients together in a small bowl until smooth. If the glaze is too thick, add more milk. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.

DIY 3 Stacked Book Challenge....

The challenge this month from Decorate More With Tip was to create a "3 stack book decor".

I like to create useful items, so I created a hidden storage box:

    Can you find it?

I took a cardboard magazine storage box from Ikea and 3 books...

I removed the spine and cover of the books, but then found out they were too wide for the magazine box, so I found a thinner book!

I cut the magazine box shorter than the book spines...

...and then glued the spines onto the box, keeping one side of the two books that would cover the side of the box:

It was as easy as that!

The box is all set to be placed a book shelf to hide items such as jewelry, money, passport, important papers, etc.

If you were a burglar, would you think to look here?
