SPRING - I am anxious for your arrival.....

It often takes a while for Spring to arrive in Central NY, BUT when it arrives, it is beautiful and I can't wait to get outdoors.

That's when my childhood memories come back and I remember my Mom screaming:

"If you fall out of that tree I will NOT call an ambulance"

and then the punishments:

"I am doing this for your own good"

and there was this one:

"Don't go out of the house with wet hair or you'll catch a cold."

Do you remember your mom's MOMILIES?

And how many time have you said them to your children?

I am sure my girls will have a few to remember, but these are some famous ones that I am sure we all heard back in the day!

  • “You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’!
  • “Use the bathroom whether you need to or not!”
  • “This is going to hurt me a lot more than it’s going to hurt you!”
  • “Close the door, we’re not trying to heat the neighborhood.”
  • “I hope you grow up and have a kid that does to you what you did to me.”
  • “So if your best friend said ‘I’m going to drive off a cliff,’ you’re going to drive off a cliff?”
  • “Be sure to have clean underwear on because you never know when you’re going to be in an accident.”
  • ”If somebody else's mother let him jump off the Empire State Building, would you want me to let you do it, too?
  • When you fall, get back up.
  • Nothing worthwhile happens after midnight.
  • Everybody else may be doing it, but you're not going to.
  • If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything.
  • If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well.
  • Don't take rides or candy from strangers
  • Girls, why would a farmer buy a cow when he can get the milk for free?
  • Say, "I'm sorry."
  • "Wish on your eyelash and blow it away."
  • Cheaters never win and winners never cheat.
  • Silence is golden.
  • Put a dime in your shoe
  • A lady doesn't keep people waiting
  • "The more you scratch it, the more it's going to itch."
  • "Lift up your legs when you go over a railroad track and make a wish."
  • "Wash behind your ears or you'll have a potato field growing back there."
  • "Put some color in your cheeks."

What is the one you remember the most?

Butterscotch Brownies....

These are so easy to make, and if you cut them in small pieces, you can have more than one!!!

BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIES:

Preheat oven to 350' and grease and flour 13"x9" baking pan
6 oz Nestle's Butterscotch morsels
1/4 c butter,
1 c light brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 T vanilla
1 c flour
1 t baking powder
3/4 t salt
Directions: Melt butterscotch morsels and butter, slowly over low heat.  Remove from heat and stir in brown sugar. Cool. Blend in eggs and vanilla.  Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and stir in. Spread into baking pan and bake for 25 minutes.  When cool, cut with a plastic knife and dust with Confectioners Sugar!

And if you hide them under a solid lid, you aren't as tempted to keep eating them because they are not so visible.......

...well that is not scientifically proven, but it works sometimes!!

Did you know? Little useful tidbits….

  1. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.. I didn't know that!
  2. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
  3. Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
  4. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

  5. Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic,  and at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger taste of garlic.
  6. Easy Deviled Eggs: Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up.  Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg.  Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
  7. Expanding Frosting: When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size.  You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.
  8. Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
  9. Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
  10. Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
  11. Need to cut some corn off the cob. Use your bundt pan. Place the ear on the opening in the center of the pan, and as you slide the knife down the ear, all the kernels will collect in the main part of the pan

The Tales of the Traveling Tote #18

The Tales of the Traveling Tote is a series of adventures that share where our Mackenzie Childs tote bags have taken us.  Four times a year a group of bloggers each write a connected post about the places we have been. We have built incredible friendships through our blogs and we hope you enjoy our tales as much as we do!

To read about how it all began, go HERE

The last three months have flown by quickly - it seems like the older I get, the faster the days pass!

December 2018

The first Saturday in December was spent visiting the Sonnenberg Mansion.  Carolers, dancers, Christmas music, S'mores by an open fire - a fun event to get us in the holiday mood!  Miss Taylor came along for the fun:

The second weekend in December my husband planned a getaway weekend for my birthday...

...So, I pulled out my passport, and packed a weekender bag and filled Miss Kenzie, my tote....

...and we traveled over the Rainbow Bridge to Canada...

...to Niagara Falls ....

...and look who also has a bag like mine:

The Falls were not frozen yet, but it sure was a cold weekend.  We spent a day in Niagara on the Lake, lunching at the oldest golf club in No America, had dinner up in the Skylon in the revolving dining room, watched fireworks over the American Falls, watched the Canadian Falls turn rainbow colors and had some luck at the Casino!  It was a fun birthday!

February 2019

We spent a week in Grand Cayman....

... and stayed at Morritts on the East End of the island...

...and again, I found another guy with a matching tote and sunglasses....

...the port in Georgetown has the prettiest color water...

...and luckily there were only 2 ships in port the day we spent shopping....

....and lunching!!

Grand Cayman is definitely for snorkelers and scuba divers...

...as there is a reef circling around most of the island.

We toured most of the island...

...and stopped at many beaches...

...Rum Point being one of our favorites...

...very quiet, lots of shady areas, lots of chaise lounges...

...and great food and beachy cocktails...

...and just a short drive away was Starfish Point, the water was so clear as this starfish was under a foot of water:

We found this rock on our early morning walk on Valentines Day....

....on this pretty beach...

...but my favorite spot was the infinity pool at the resort!

Chickens, roosters and cats run wild on the island - and I can say that I do not miss the crowing...

....but I do miss the sun and the fresh air...

...I am yearning for summer!
