Zentangle

I recently took an art class where we learned the art of Zentangle.

Zentangle is a miniature abstract work of art created by a collection of patterns, typically done on a 3 1/2" by 3 1/2 " paper tile using a pencil and a black pen.  It was developed by a former monk named Rick Roberts and a calligrapher named Marie Thomas on 2003.  This method is a relaxing and meditative way to create art from structured, repetitive patterns in a relatively short period of time.

Simply put, it's mindful doodling. When the mind is involved in a creative endeavor, we tend to put away our stress and focus our energy on creating something unique.

The class was taught by Linda.....

.....and here is some samples of her art:

Linda guided us step by step, using a pencil, smudger and an ink pen:

I took notes along the way of the different patterns she taught us:

And here is my finished piece:

There's a variety of resources available if you are interested in learning this art

All of the participants put their art together and it reminded me of a patchwork quilt:

The variety of interpretations proves how art is subjective!

This is an art anyone can do!

I look forward to taking another class next month!

  1. I love the idea of creating art as a form of meditation. I should definitely look into this.
