Recently I was watching a TV show with chefs competing against each other and one of the chefs made a grilled cheese sandwich. She used mayonnaise on the outside of the bread, saying that it made the bread crispier.
So I decided to do a taste test. I used my favorite jalapeño/cheddar bread from Price Chopper and good ol' processed cheese.
I spread butter on one side and I spread mayo on the other, cooking one side for the same amount of time as the opposite side
The results? No difference at all in crispiness - and no difference in taste either.
How do you make your grilled cheese sandwiches?
I use margarine or butter, whichever I have at the time. Grilled cheese sounds yummy! I like it with tomato soup.
ReplyDeleteI use butter. I haven't had a toasted cheese sandwich in a while, but I bet it is yummy with the jalapeño/cheddar bread.
ReplyDeleteIt's hatch chili time here in Austin. I had a delicious turkey sandwich with hatch chili mayo and hatch chili roasted turkey breast on a hatch chili bread. Yummy! Not that this has anything to do with your experiment. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWe make our grilled cheese in a panini maker and don't add any butter or mayo on the outside.
Interesting. I've always used butter but always willing to try new things.

I use mayo because it spreads easier. I never remember to get the butter out and soften it before hand.
