MacKenzie-Childs Knock-off Tuffet

I wanted one of these, but couldn't afford it:
So I made this:
It's not nearly as professional as Forever Decorating's, but she inspired me to try it.
I bought 4 legs at Home Depot:
and an 18" table top:
I marked off the quadrants for the leg placement:
and drilled holes:
Align CenterI bought 3" foam and cut an 18" circle. I also cut out a circle in the center:
And just in case you don't know how to cut foam, use an electric knife. I shaved the edges to give it shape:
This was the fun part, because I love to doodle:
I sewed a "tube" of fabric and batting and stapled it to the bottom of the base. There are also 2 small holes in the center of the wood - I ran fishing line up through these holes to hold in the center "wooden button":
top view:
I gathered the batting:
I also gathered the fabric. I covered a 5" disk with coordinating fabric and batting for the center. This disk also has 2 holes and I tied the fishing line from the base to this to hold it in the carved out center of the foam:
I glued some fringe around the bottom, screwed in the legs and glued a small wooden button on the top to hid the fishing line knot.
This was my first attempt in making a tuffet and I am pretty pleased with it!

It was a one day project with lots of supplies all over the kitchen counter, numerous swear words and one leg that had a defective screw!! The project was fairly reasonable to make (about $60.00) and I was surprised to find that 3" foam was $40.00 yd!!
Foam: $20.00
Wood: $5.00 and $2.00
Legs: $11.00
Fabric: $10.00
Fringe: $10.00
Batting: $3.00

  9. Patti, Thanks for giving me credit but you did a really nice job. Yes, you are right, you did it in the reverse of how I did it. I made my material in a big circle using a seam down the center so i would have lots of gathering fabric. I poked a hole in the center, strung my button string through it and all the layers to the bottom of the wood. I then turned it upside down on a can good and kneeled on it to get the button to recess. I stapled the string tight. I flipped it back over and tucked and stapled pleats to the front of the wood. I then covered the staples with tassel fringe. Terry

  10. Patti, I just found two more ways that I did this same tuffet of mine. I added them to my post on MacKenzie Childs Inspiration #1 post. See it took me several trys to get it just how I really wanted it and if I was to do it again, I would make my foam larger than the wood like MC did. Terry

  14. You did a fabulous job, Patti! I love those MacKenzie-Childs tuffets, too, and made a few of my own several years ago. Not quite her standards, but the whimsy was what hooked me. Love how you painted the legs and thanks for mentioning the wood table top piece. I have a project I've been thinking about that requires a round wood table top and I can just add it to my Home Depot shopping list!

  19. I love love love tutorials like this. My grandmother made a stool in the 60's by binding together 6 or 7 tall juice cans together with tape and then covering them with corduroy. Then she hooked a rug for the top. I still have it. I treasure it. I love handmade things. Thanks for sharing this. It led me to the memory of how my Grandmother made a stool also.
    Yours is very elegant. Linda

  20. I like your footstool better. It fits your decor to a T and isn't as ornate as the one in the first pic.
