Sweethearts VS Conversation Hearts......

I have always been a fan of candy from the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco,  probably because they were made in Massachusetts, not far from where I lived in my younger years.
Necco wafers were always one of my favorite candies, and as a child, we played "communion" with them, traded each other for our favorite colors and always waited for Necco to come out with Sweethearts for Valentine's day!

Sweethearts were first made in 1901.  Sadly, Necco filed for bankruptcy and the rights to the candy was acquired by the Spangler Candy Company last fall.  Necco made about 8 billion Sweathearts per year and because of the company change, Spangler was not able to produce them this year and they will not be available until 2020.

Is there a difference between Sweethearts and Brachs Conversation Hearts?

I am not sure, but one thing I do know.....The "sayings" on Brach's are sloppier and harder to read, and some appear blank.

What's the point if you can't read the sentiments?

I can't wait for 2020 for Sweethearts to be back on the store shelves!

  1. My mother loves the Neccos! They seem to be more difficult to find though so I pick them up for her when I see them. The last few boxes of the sweetheart candies I bought were awful and you are right, couldn't read a thing on most of them...so what is the point? I hope when they make their return, they will be much improved! Have a great one! Hugs!

  2. I loved Neccos waffers when I was a child. Never see them now. I totally agree about the lack of quality in the Brachs hearts. I think they taste different too. I'll be happy to see the Sweethearts return in 2020.

  3. I tried leaving a comment yesterday and will try again. This new Google stuff isn't letting me comment on some and yours is one.
Looks like it might be working.
We have always loved Neccos and I had no idea that's where the name came from. The brown ones were my favorite. Just got some huge M&M's that were to have words printed on them - only a few did and really bad
printing - what is going on? I still love the hearts - will look next year for the Sweethearts!

  4. Patti, I'm not sure I even paid attention to the fact that there was Sweethearts and Brach's, but now I know! But I definitely knew my Necco wafers, and we did the same thing you did! I buy those now for Mr. P. at the Dollar Tree (a lot cheaper than Cracker Barrel). He'll sit and eat an entire roll. I used to save the chocolate ones for last, thought they were the best. :)

  5. I liked he wafers best. Brach's candy hearts aren't all that good but when the kids and grands were little, I always had a big bowl of them on the table. Like you, not much point in having them without readable says on them.

  6. I have always loved Neccos, and my siblings and I used to trade colors. The black ones and yellow ones were my favorite.

  7. Oh love all of these and they do have sweet memories from growing up. They have the Necco wafers at Cracker Barrel. I go there for their old fashioned candy my MIL loves. Love the pretty presentation of hearts and MC bowl. I don't like it when I can't read my hearts!
