10 on the 10th - An Easy Fall Scarecrow to Make

Welcome to 10 on the 10th, where a group of us craft something that cost under $10 to make!

                         Scarecrows

The traditional scarecrow is a decoy made in the shape of a human. It is dressed in old clothes and placed in an open field to discourage crows, blackbirds and starlings from feeding on seeds and sprouting crops. The loose clothing flaps in the breeze, giving the illusion of a real, moving person.

This scarecrow will have no purpose other than being decorative!

This adorable scarecrow is quite simple to make for under $10.00.

Supplies:
glass cylinder ($1.00)
Straw hat ($.99)
Raffia ($5.99)

Supplies on hand:
paper/marker/tape for pattern
ribbon
paint
fall trimmings
glue gun

The first step is to draw a face pattern to be placed inside the glass cylinder:

Tape the pattern inside to make sure it is size appropriate:

Gather your paint, I used multi-surface paint:

Paint the glass, remove the paper, then bake the cylinder in the oven according to directions::

Use one third of the package of raffia, pulling it apart and placing it in the cylinder....

...leaving a few strands hanging over the edge:

Decorate the hat with a raffia bow and berries or leaves:

Glue a few leaves on top of glass and glue the hat on the rim:

A trim of checked ribbon was glued on the base:

And he is ready to be displayed with my fall decor!

I am joining the 10 on the 10th crew - hop over to see if they were able to create fall decor for under $10:

  10. This is so cute! I have all of the items needed with the exception of the straw hat, and I’m sure that I can find one of those locally. What a clever way to teach us how to paint that adorable face. That would not have occurred to me.
